Another great comparison George. I’m going to rank them before I listen to the show and need to give them some listening time first. It would be great if you could post up the topic in advance of the show. I did listen to the intro and appreciate your new release bit. But I cannot find them listed in the comments. May I suggest that you list all the albums discussed in the description? Sometimes comments get buried. I think it would be nice if you could post new album announcements here as you’re so on top of this.

The new releases are listed in the comments, always. I can't put them in the description. Only the account owner can do that, and he thus far, has not chosen to do so. There's not even 100 comments. You can find me! Next months topic will be Self Titled Debuts, Pt. 2 - The Sequel <img src=" " alt="" style="max-width:100%;">

Interesting choices. Curios how they will react to Neural Code.

First off, I was listening in a more evaluative way than I usually do. And approaching it that way, was struck by how great the drumming/percussion is on all 4 - something I usually pay little deliberate attention to, but obviously has a huge influence on the feel of the tunes and albums.
4. Soft Machine - Bundles - Close tie with Gong. This one has it’s moments but a little monotonous at times, and although jazzy at times, errs into progressive/psychedelic territory. I’m not a huge fan of the Canterbury scene, which in generally more on the progressive rock than jazz side for my tastes 3. Gong - Gazeuze! - the 1st cut Expresso kicks ass. More digestible. More Holdworth presence. Like Bundles, just a tad too prog for me. 2. Bruford - one of a kind - Probably the best album in terms of composition & tune variety. Really my favorite of all the Canterbury stuff. And stretches outside that genre into other fusion territory. Perhaps a bit derivative in terms of other fusion influences. Being a later release that the others, Holdsys style is more fully formed and the best showcase of his playing. 1. Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean - not my favorite JLP album, but I’ve always been a huge JLP fan. His playing is wired into my DNA at this point and this one has to be number one. This album is really funky for the French violinist, which really gets my foot tapping and involved in the tunes. I never realized this was Steve Smith, and I don’t really think of him as a funk drummer, but he is really in the pocket with the bassist.

I approve of this ranking! Hah. Just listened to the show. Another great one. Next month is going to be interesting because it is comparing eras in a way, which may polarize the decisions. perhaps you could have had an 80s release in place of one of the 70s ones.

Maybe. I had 2 80s ones the first time around, but I'm sure there could be more. Again, the ones chosen are driven, in large part, by getting ones that Pete and the guest both know already. If they have to drill multiple albums that are new to them, it's not good.

Bruford Ponty Gong Soft Machine
The first two are interchangable, almost...same with the second two. My first known exposure to AH was via a floppy of Devil Take The Hindmost from Guitar Player mag..that led to Road Games and Metal Fatigue. I had heard, but not owned, that Bruford album--a friend had it but it did not actually register when I first heard it. Became an AH fanboy after Devil, though....and have been ever since.
I am also a guy who finds his solo work to be his ultimate expression. I love his sideman gigs, of course, and the Prog stuff.....and the Lifetime album would be a tie with the Bruford album for me, if it were included. But.....I think AH was an idiosyncratic voice, not merely as a soloist, but also as a composer, and I think his vision was most fully realized on his solo works. Non Brewed Condiment....is there another piece of music as completely ridiculous as that? Maybe some of the late Coltrane-Ali duet stuff.....but nah. And his chordal experiments with volume pedal etc. are almost symphonic, a la Elgar and other composers, to me. Something about his brand of British Melancholy is really sui generis. I miss AH. He was One Of A Kind, for sure.
