When I was a teen in the '70s & early '80s, and I didn't even know fusion existed, I was into progressive rock. The more mainstream stuff like Yes, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Rush. I still listen to it every now and again for a throwback. The lyrics, sonic layering & textures, and composition were very creative and intelligent. I've been listening to Gentle Giant on Scott Henderson's recommendation - sort of a combination of Yes & Mahavishnu

I didn't get into fusion until the early 80s. I too, started with prog rock. The 2nd album I ever bought was Leftoverture, and it was on from there. Close to the Edge and Hemispheres are perfect, desert island albums in my book, to this day.
