Curious if anyone can think of any examples or recordings (and possible audio/video links) of a "Modern Jazz" Combo (ex: Guitar clean tone, Upright Bass, Drums) not playing standards and Bop tunes but playing in a Fusion context with its knotty rhythms, shifting time signatures, complicated heads, impressive technical "runs", etc. etc. I am trying to think of any recordings with such a Trio (or any number of musicians) with the drumming in the progressive style as a Virgil Donati performance with the double bassist not playing the traditional walking lines but perhaps in a Pastorius/Feraud style and of course as I mentioned above the guitarist with a clean tone yet executing lines that would sound impressive with a "Rock tone" but keeping the sonics within an acoustic modern jazz sound aesthetics.

Two examples could be a few tracks on Coryell's SPACES album or Machacek's [sic] album.

Maybe something by James Muller, like Neurotica.

If it is drums you are after, then you could try the Bad Plus cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass"

Thanks for your help in this thread to illustrate there are a few combos out there playing this sort of music which is encouraging and worth exploring for one's own ambition to contribute and perform such music to hopefully stand out in the crowd.

I think this goes to what are we really including in the definition of fusion. I mean, I posted something from Rez Abbasi in the listening to forum. Does that count? As far as I am concerned, once you plug at least one instrument in and use at least some rock rhythms, you are in the zone. For me, the best example is that anything David Binney touches is fusion to me, whether his own groups, Donny McCaslin, or a host of others that fit the original poster's query.

David Binney has some great CDs which to me are fusion. As are albums like Alex Sipiagin's Balance 38-58 and John Escreet's The Age We Live In but not everything that Sipiagin and Escreet produce is fusion to my ears. Not that it matters - it's all music.
