If we're talking about jazz fusion albums released between 1970-1979, which is, in your opinion, the best year and which album(s) make it the best?

It's a two horse race for me, between 76 and 77. 1976 has more depth at the top, with Romantic Warrior, School Days, Joyous Lake, Oh Yeah!, Imaginary Voyage, and Gazeuse all hovering somewhere between very good and great. Lots of other good ones too, including Coses Nostres, Dr. Tree, Land of the Midnight Sun, Transformation, Flight Never Ending, Unorthodox Behaviour, etc. 1977 makes a case for me, just because the top 3 are all total classics in my book. Sentiments, Elegant Gypsy and Enigmatic Ocean are all desert island material, but it does fall off after those. Free Fall, Wardance, and Electric Savage, Frittfall...all good, but not at that level. So, I'll say 1976

1977 is my choice.
Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean is probably the most important album for me, being the introduction to both jazz fusion and Allan Holdsworth. We also got a series of great albums by Gary Boyle (The Dancer), Colosseum II (Electric Savage, Wardance), Brand X (Moroccan Roll, Livestock), Al Di Meola (Elegant Gypsy) and Weather Report (Heavy Weather).

Difficult to answer without doing a lot more work than I care to do, but 1971 has always been a pivotal year for me. It saw the release of the first Mahavishnu Orchestra album and also Miles Davis' Tribute to Jack Johnson and Live-Evil albums. Yes there were a lot of great albums in the following years and strictly speaking one of those years would be my best too if I could only be bothered to do the research.

Across the board I would say 1973. As far as just jazz/fusion I just don't know. It would take a long time to figure considering all the European bands, of which many never made it to cd.

My early 70's game is weak. I only have 5 records from 1971, and just 10 from 1973

I have a lot of vinyl from the early 70's. There were bands like New Trolls and Pop Workshop and Release Music Orchestra and Secret Oyster and early Passport and Volker Kriegel plus many more I would have to dig out.

Hi teejay and welcome.
Your choices make me wonder if, like me, you live in Britain.

We are pretty near each other (next door by American standards) as I live in West Sussex.
