A supergroup is a music group whose members have successful solo careers or are part of other groups or well known in other musical professions. Supergroups are sometimes formed as side projects and thus not intended to be permanent, while other times can become the primary project of the members' careers. - WikipediaSo, what do you think about supergroups and/or collaborations between well-known musicians in jazz fusion? Which one is your favorite? How many of them have you seen live?

My all-time favorite supergroup is Players with Scott Henderson, T Lavitz, Jeff Berlin and Steve Smith. Great set of compositions and superb playing by everyone. I'll never get tired of listening to this one.
Front Page (Biréli Lagrène, Dennis Chambers & Dominique Di Piazza) is another great one.

My all-time favorite supergroup is Players with Scott Henderson, T Lavitz, Jeff Berlin and Steve Smith. Great set of compositions and superb playing by everyone. I'll never get tired of listening to this one. Front Page (Biréli Lagrène, Dennis Chambers & Dominique Di Piazza) is another great one. My top 2 as well. That they were both one and done is a real annoyance. |

Jing Chi (Colaiuta, Ford, Haslip)
Ganbale, Hamm, Smith
Uncle Moe's Space Ranch (Chambers, Garsed, Helmerich,Kinsey, Willis)
Vital Tech Tones (Henderson, Smith, Wooten)

I forgot UMSR. Probably because, although it qualifies, it didn't come together in the traditional fashion. It developed organically from the Garsed & Helmerich records. The Uncle Moe's debut is my favorite.

Probably almost every touring jazz/fusion group nowadays is a super group. I'm going to see one Sunday at Berks jazzfest, a tribute to Chuck Loeb.

No one in Tribal Tech had a successful solo career or was a part of other well known groups before the band formed. They actually formed organically, at M.I. Hell, none of their drummers or keyboardists did either of those things until after, they were out of the band/the band broke up |

But they became a supergroup. The problem with these threads as I mentioned before is that unlike in rock music, EVERY good fusion or jazz group is a supergroup of sorts. It makes these threads a bit useless. |

Or UZEB, Trix, Tohpati Ethnomission, TEQ, Damn'co, Divje Jezero, Dixie Dregs, Dobles Ensemble and Dojo. Or The Renegades, Kick the Cat, Quartado, Progger, Walk Away, Panzerballett, Ohm, Nassaun Fasaani, Metalwood, The Mencial Project, and Marutyri. Or Lu7, The Linder Bros., Kneebody, KBB, The Invisible Whip, Final Step, Flying Machines and Freek Johnson. Or Gravitational Force Field, Hardcoretet, Helmet of Gnats and Innersphere. ETC., ETC. No, the problem is people that won't stick to the parameters of the term or the spirit of it. |

The players are well known to many of us musicians as stars in many of those groups you mention and for us, they are supergroups. The one album wonder thread also is odd to me as well for that matter as people are citing guys who have made 10 or even 50 albums in some cases. Jazz and fusion don't operate along the rock model mostly. |
