I kind of feel more often than not that Steps Ahead get overlooked at times when top jazz fusion bands get talked about especially when they've had some pretty big names like Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Mike Stern and Tony Levin to name a few have played in their lineups, they're one of the best out there and made some pretty incredible music during the early 80s to the mid 90s. Their live album which was recorded during the band's Magentic tour is red hot. What's everyone's thoughts on Steps Ahead?

I haven't heard a ton, but usually find them to be more solid, than spectacular. I've not been motivated to collect their material. I only have Live in Tokyo 1986, and a bootleg of Lugano 2005. Pleasant stuff, but rarely stirring

I am a fan of the earlier incarnations especially--when they were Steps. Smokin' In the Pit is pretty great, IMO. I have a bunch of their albums. I think they land more on the Jazz side of the Jazz/Rock spectrum. A bit like Weather Report in that respect. I am definitely a fan.

Count me in as a fan of the Japanese stuff (before the "Ahead") and the first two on Elektra Musician. They fell off for me at the time. But heck, the music does sound pretty dated when I return to this stuff.
