When it comes to the top bass players, Jimmy Haslip has definitely got to be included in the conversation and has a very unique way of playing bass. He has been part of some incredible projects over the years and made brilliant music with some amazing bands like Jing Chi w/ Robben Ford & Vinnie Colaiuta, Renegade Creation w/ Robben Ford, Gary Novak & Michael Landau, Jeff Lorber Fusion Band and during his long legendary association as a member of The Yellowjackets.
His recent work with the Arc Trio and Otmaro Ruiz & Jimmy Branley are very impressive. I'd love to see Haslip make some more solo albums under his own name as he's one of the best bass players in the world.
What's everyone's thoughts on Jimmy Haslip?

I like his work and have been lucky enough to see him live 3 times: with the Yellowjackets, with Holdsworth and in a band with Dewa Budjana.

I have become more of a fan in recent years. I never had any Yellowjackets stuff, or Jing Chi or anything. What I like from him is the MSM Schmidt albums he mans, and that last ARC Trio, which was my album of the year last year.
I saw him once, with Holdsworth, and I appreciated he was the only guy in the trio who seemed to be cognizant of the fact that he was on stage and not in the rehearsal room!

I've been very luck to see Haslip in a number of different situations over the last 20 years now, i got to see him twice with the Yellowjackets, once with Allan Holdsworth, twice with Jeff Lorber Fusion Band and once with Mike Stern & Jeff Lorber. He is the real deal and can more than hold his own in any setting, i loved his ARC Trio album which was excellent but the one that has completely blew me away was the trio album he made with Ruiz & Branley, it was incredible. I highly recommend you check out his Jing Chi stuff, there is some great music there and the Yellowjackets albums i would recommend listening to are the ones from 1986 - 1993 period, that for me was the peak of his bass playing

I’m lucky enough to have seen him probably 8 times live, mostly on various gigs at the Baked Potato. A very tasty player (with strangely small feet!). His personality is very strong in his solos, usually leaning towards soulful blues based vocabulary even if the song is not. A good example of this is in the recent live Holdsworth recordings.

Saw him at the end of December with Oz Noy and Dennis Chambers recording for a live album. We were talking with Jimmy afterwards, super nice guy.

I've heard that he's a great guy. I'm seeing Jimmy with the Jeff Lorber Trio in October when they come to the UK, looking forward to that.
