It's no secret that Return To Forever is one of the greatest bands of all time from the jazz fusion genre and we all know that the 74 - 77 lineup of Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White & Al Di Meola is legendary but taking Corea out of the equation, which RTF member do you think had the best debut album?
Lenny White: Venusian / Summer?
Stanley Clarke: Children Of Forever?
Al Di Meola: Land Of The Midnight Sun?

Al Di Meola without a doubt but don't forget Bill Connors. Unfortunately I am not as fond of Theme to the Gaurdian[sic] as the three albums he released on the Evidence label.

I would go Dimeola too. I like Venusian Summer, but find it a little overrated in some circles. The 2 epics kind of drag. Don't own the Clarke, but there must be a reason for that. Vocals maybe? I know I've looked into it at some point

I know I've looked into it at some point I would definitely go with Al Di Meola too, my dad told me that his debut completely blew his mind away and completely devastated the guitar landscape. I like Clarke but i tend to find that a lot of his stuff although very good always let me down with vocals. However his recent output from 2003 to now have been fantastic, I haven't listened to White's albums that much but i think i will give them another listen

I strongly recommend listening to Lenny White's Anomaly album. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Yeah, DiMeola. I like Connors, but not so much his debut.

As my favorite RTF record is the first one I'd say I like Stanley's Vulcan Princess and Arito's Virgin Land respectively both 74 ( EDIT softmore not debut sorry) there is just something really raw and expressive on those for me perhaps it's just the nostalgia. Don't get me wrong I love Al and Lenny just not the solo stuff but hey I'm a bassist.

Di Meola for sure...I am not a fan of Clarke's stuff minus School Daze. But Im also kind of sick of Di Meola's solo stuff right now.

See, here I was all ready to nominate Tones For Joan's Bones when I read the thread title...
I have to say that I used to say DiMeola, but now that I am many decades on, the one that I probably plan the most is Children of Forever. I can't get enough of Andy Bey in any context.
