I like him but prefer his earlier albums, in particular Improvision which he made with Jeff Sipe and Mathew Garrison

The end results usually end up being underwhelming for me. Huge talent, and I like some of his stuff, but there is more that I could leave rather than take. 24 Tales is my favorite. I like about half of the FAT album material. I like Featuring Ourselves and Improvision pretty well, but feel like both could be better. That pretty much summarizes how I feel about his career, actually. Pretty good; could be better.

Yes! I love Alex. I have his signature guitar and I think he is about the best thing since Holdsworth. He is also really funny - seeing him in concert is like a mixture of seeing fusion and a stand up comedy show between tunes. Sometimes his releases are a little esoteric (as George says), but in a live situation he is wonderful.

I love Featuring Ourselves which, it has really a nice blend of Holdsworth, Zappa and Gong all rolled into one, his trio projects with Sipe and Garrison for me are Machacek's best work.
