Sad that it was so sudden. My personal favorite of the "shredders"

I think Wired, Blow by Blow & There & Back were very much fusion. And even if not, they were my gateway into fusion. After those albums it was not fusion. But Beck always had such a unique voice on the guitar. I wouldn't call him a shredder though.

Yeah, I find those three to be fusion albums, for sure. Jeff is one of those guys who strikes me as a master of control, tone, and lyricism. Not a "Burner," though there are moments where his solos are burning. Really, a unique voice, and a huge influence on so many guitarists of all stripes.

He was very original in his sound and style and technique. Nobody could ever sound like him. He was creative on the fly live, making every note breathe and resonate. He could wail, whisper and crunch like his guitar was a living thing. And he never used a pick.
When I bought Truth when it came out, I thought, wow, this guy is something else. He will definitely go places.
And when he died and I heard it on the news I cried out, “Oh no!”
All my axe heroes are vanishing and I look in the mirror and wonder how long do I have? What a reality check.

This comment came from one of the forums: “ i find it so hard to overlook that Beck never plays in time and he seems to be unable to stop himself from making silly motorcycle noises, shrieks, farts and other guitar gimmicky stuff. He's best when he just plays a melody. problem is, what to do after the melody? He never solved that issue.” I don’t mean to be irrelevant at this time, but I can’t say I disagree with the sound effects part. I think he was at his best playing melodically on the 3 fusion albums.
