As a leader or co-leader, so no Miles or Lifetime picks. Choose 3. Here are the options: Mahavishnu Orchestra Shakti One Truth Band Trio of Doom Dimeola, McLaughlin, and de Lucia The Translators Mahavishnu John McLaughlin Trio The Free Spirits Heart of Things Five Peace Band The 4th Dimension
Not exactly surprising, the original Mahavishnu Orchestra is one of my picks. Right up there would be The 4th Dimension. My 3rd pick is between JMT and HoT. Unfortunately, neither of them lasted long enough to see where their songwriting would go. I'll go with JMT 3rd.

The first two MO albums are impossible to beat, even though lately I've been listening to 4D more. The Heart of Things' studio album is good and the live one is even better, but the bronze medal goes to JM Trio just because Qué Alegria is such a great album. 1. MO 2. 4D 3. JMT Hmmm... that looks familiar.

I'd put the current lineup of the 4th Dimension ahead of everything but the MO, Shakti, and the One Truth Band. Ranjit Barot has raised the energy level and made a huge difference in the band.

One Truth Band for first, as I saw them with Woody Sunship Theus on Drums! L Shankar on violin, Fernando Saunders and Stu Goldberg on the keys. That was a shredfest.
Next favorite would be the Vision of the Emerald Beyond era M.O. band, Ralph Armstrong and Narada made a great duo for the soloists, Ponty was a welcome step forward for the violin position and I might the only one that enjoys the vocals and string ensembles.

Going to break the rules a little bit and say:
MO Mk 1 MO Mk 2
Oh sure, I dig the flamenco and Indian stuff, but nothing else measures up to these two, IMO.

The Belo Horizonte - Music Spoken Here band (Translators?) was as revolutionary as Mahavishnu Orchestra. Tommy Campbell is killing, and the tunes are magnificent. Melodies to die for. I may have to cover one of those tunes on my next recording.
