The ones I can think of that have played with Billy on his original material: Tommy Bolan Mike Stern John Abercrombie John Scofield Dean Brown Carl Orr Frank Gambale
Focusing on recent recordings, I'm going to say my favorites are Orr & Gambale. Dean Brown is great, but just a little too.., Dean Brown. The live stuff with Dean sometimes sounds more like the Dean Brown band than the Billy Cobham Band. He's maybe a bit to sparse, and more of a rhythmic/groove player. Gambale did a surprising disappearing act with Cobham, playing the supporting role, Blowing just enough without getting to much into cliche sweepery. And Carl Orr is always very satisfying in Cobham's EU band. Not as much of a big name, but great player in that role. Jimmy herring probably did the best Red Baron solo IMO. That song was made for him.

I agree that Carl Orr is very under-rated. Difficult to say who my favourite is but I also like what Abercrombie and Scofield did on the earlier Cobham albums and you cannot overlook Bolin's contribution to the Spectrum album (which I regard as one of the top ten classic fusion albums).
There are a couple of other guitarists you could add to your list as well: Peter Wolpl and Jaen-Marie Ecay.

There is a guy named Per Gade on a 2002 boot that I have. He's pretty impressive on there. Like Ulf Wakenius meets Gambale. I think he was part of Billy's Culturemix band. He's my pick.

Barry Finnerty on Flight Time is my favorite. He lives in my area. I met him at a Landau show once. He was sitting by me and I was talking with him, but didn't know who he was until he introduced himself.

Fareed Haque on the Crosswinds Project tour He was the only bright spot of the show that I watched. Him, and Hanson, really.

Solid guy, of course, but doesn't particularly resonate with me.

I was a charter member of the old fuze-zone, but what good did that do me?

For me, Tommy Bolin and his tape Echoplex antics. That first cut on Spectrum still excites me greatly.
