The more I go through and rate recent releases, the Protocol albums all rise to the top. Even the debut album is good, especially considering Simon played all the instruments. Which ones are your favorites & why?

My top is Protocol 4. I think it's the best batch of songs and it's definitely the best guitar player they've had. Force Majeure is a close second. Mostly good songs, and Tony Roberts is a wicked sax player.
I actually don't care for the other three very much.

For me it's II & IV. The compositions stand out the most, and great guitar work on both. These easily rank up there with any of the greats IMO. Timmons is no less of a player IMO, he may not have Howe's flashiness but makes up for it with feeling.

I didn't think he was a good fit. I thought he was over his head in a fusion band.

I didn't think he was a good fit. I thought he was over his head in a fusion band. I saw him on both the II & III tours and became a fan. I never thought of him as a fusion player. He's approaching it more as a rock player, but never seemed over his head. Howe is rock based too, but more shred than blues.

My favorite Protocol album is Force Majeure because Ray Russell is my favorite Protocol guitarist. First one and P4 I haven't heard.

Whaaa? In my top 10 of the decade, if not all time. I think Ray Russell was the most mediocre of all of them, unless you count Simon Philips guitar work on the first. But pretty impressive considering he's a drummer.

Force Majeure and the two on Lipstick are my favorites. Count me in as a big Ray Russell fan. I especially love his early stuff before he was a fusion player. Mind blowing material there.
Truth be told, I like them all but it depends on my mood. I will say the more recent ones are a little samey. Howe was a nice addition. Hopefully, he records with Sill.

So, I listened to P4 twice today. It's very good like the others, but it didn't change my mind; Ray Russell is still the most interesting one of the three. Howe is good considering he's a shredder and I like Timmons' playing too. Four RYM stars for each album.

Protocol V is by far the best Simon Phillips album to date and what an amazing band of musicians who can really play. Unbelievable collection of music that sounds very similar to Chick Corea Elektric Band
