They're definitely fusion. That article makes them seem way more out of the norm than they actually are, though his points are all spot on. Your description nails it more succinctly. I would guess a lot of old heads don't dig them for the backgrounding of guitar and the emphasis on groove. Their loss.
If you want more like them, try Filou, Funky Knuckles, Njet Njet 9, Dam'Nco, and Nassaun Fasaani

I hate to use the term, but the new direction embodies many of the positive qualities of the millennial generation (yes, there are some positive qualities). Millennial Fusion?

I just don't see the need for a new term because they emphasize some facets of the genre and de-emphasize others. It's still jazz rock, just like a cake with more or less of certain ingredients is still a cake.

As I'm making an attempt to organize and catalog my music, it is helpful for me to be able to put it into buckets that make sense to me. It's mostly all fusion, but I'm tagging it to help me keep things straight. And having a hard time coming up with a term for this. How about Nu-Fusion?

Like you I am not too bothered about categories although they have their uses.

Not a serious question George. Like you I am not too bothered about categories although they have their uses. For sure. I hate when people say, "I hate genres. Let's get rid of all the genres." When someone recommends something to me I haven't heard, I would like a general idea of what it will sound like. By the same token, the sub-genre thing gets a little silly. I mean, the umbrella term fusion works fine for these bands. I don't find the need to go deeper.

I know you say you don't care about genres, but regardless, you (and everyone else here) stick to a pretty well defined set of genre boundaries. And I think it's great (amazing actually) that we're all so in sync. Pretty much every group has their share of genre battles, but that seems to be entirely absent here, which is refreshing.
