During college, in addition to fusion, I was very into Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Jack Dejonette, Bob Berg, Joe Lovano, Gil Goldsein, Mike Mainieri, Eddie Gomez, Bill Evans, Steve Kahn, Branford Marsalis. Many of them were associates in projects like Steps Ahead. I don't know exactly what we'd call it, but is was sort of post-bop, modern jazz fuzed with element of pop & funk, which wasn't afraid of the latest musical technology (EWI & other controllers, synths & sampling). It was real jazz without the dogmatism or historicism of guys like Wynton Marsalis. I still really enjoy this kind of thing, but is sort of hard to find nowadays. Some of Chris Potter's stuff (like Lift) is along these lines.
