There are so many great options now. Streaming has outgrown most of it’s growing pains. Check out Roon Labs. This is what I’d use if I was using a conventional hi-if set-up. Lots of affordable streamer options, great interface and open system plays well with lots of different hardware. But we just use Sonos for whole house music. Not so hi-if, but for the less than ideal in-ceiling speakers it is the best option. That's a pretty nice looking interface. Time well tell if it catches on and becomes widely supported. Roon is already widely supported by the audiophile community. Check out computeraudiophile.com. I had a free trial and used it for a couple months and it is very compatible. It can use a Sonos or Bluesound device an an output source. But it is simply overkill for my house as most of the sources are lo-fi, and I can stream to my home theatre system with either appletv or sonos. Bluesound is a step up from sonos in sound quality, as it handles higher rez files. But performs worse sonically than sonos with low-end speakers. Sonos apparently EQs the sound to sound better on crappy speakers, while Bluesound is more accurate, and would sound better feeding a better system.

I missed this before. What is this? The Hoffman Forum? Did I take a very wrong turn somewhere?
Nice setups, gents. As for media, I do vinyl, CDs or digital depending on circumstances. I'm a big vinyl head, like GeorgeX.

My new full-size system I’m playing around with in my home office (not too elegant, and a little tight, but workable). I’ve had these speakers (Snell D) in storage for years. I just picked up this amp (Classe CA-2200), and am using my existing Burson Pre-amp/DAC and Audirvana on my laptop. I plan to add a pre-amp and a different DAC & streamer, and new speakers at well. But fun for now to have this alternative to my little desk-fi.

Re: Snell D Is there actually a tweeter on the backside of the cabinet?

Re: Snell D Is there actually a tweeter on the backside of the cabinet? Yes, my Snell type EII have one as well. Is is something Snell typically did I think to create a sense of space. On the D you can control the level or defeat the tweeter completely. I think it sounds better with it on. The Ds sound pretty damn good for a 25 year old speaker.

They are a great sounding speaker for what you can get them for. Originally $1800US, I paid $180. Very even response. Full, impactful sound. Decent soundstage. Pretty much all of the pre-Boston Acoustic Snells are hard to go wrong with. My plan is to live with these for a bit, and see how I like the full size system, then most likely upgrade to these: www.tektondesign.com/double-impact.html

Vinyl is too expensive now, like $30 a pop.
...for my system, I have a set of old Altec spkrs I got at Goodwill, two Bose surrounds I got at a pawn shop, a Denon DVC 3910 I got on Ebay, a recently acquired Harmon Kardon AVR 247 I got on EBay, a couple of "car" 12" fuzzy passive cabinets (like lowriders use) for subs, powered by 2 old McIntosh 50-watt solid state monoblocks. I listen to SACDs and CDs, I'm going to try out Blu-Ray audio, as my HK has HDMI inputs. I like a lot of bass, and a lot of volume, even on classical stuff.
I'm like the Japanese, I like CDs. I want the actual object and its provenance.
