+ loads of other albums, especially from Italy by PFM, Banco, Locanda Delle Fate, Maxophone etc.

I'm not a big fan of prog rock after the 70s, but for example Echolyn's As the World and Änglagård's Hybris/Epilog are great. There are some bigger bands that I don't care that much (or at all), like Pink Floyd, ELP and Rush.

Yeah, I get you. I never got into ELP, or Floyd either. Or Crimson for that matter.
Not for lack of trying. Just no connection there.

I like some of the modern prog rock. Druckfarben especially. Transatlantic also.

I've only heard the Priest, which I think is solid, but wildly overrated. Best since Painkiller?! Nah.
I've never heard any of the other bands, though at at least I have heard OF the other 4 in the top 5 there. That may be because they're all Kuma's burgers though.

I don't do growly vox, and I'm guessing some of them feature those.

Yes, there is quite a bit of growling above. Generally, it took me a few years to get over it and I quite enjoy much of that style (thanks to early Opeth for example, even though they are shit now). I will say that with most music with vocals, it's just another instrument in the mix. I think you may like Khemmis. 95% clean. On Priest, maybe it is overrated but with KK gone, I just think people thought that they were done and they most certainly are not.

I would support Priest going forward. Particularly after the reception this record got. I may not think it's any better than their average disc,
but it's certainly no worse either. Can Glenn get it together for a new one though? If not, they may run into that 'cover band' bullshit from their fans.

I never bought that 'just another instrument' thing. If you really listen to the lines these guys produce, you'd fire any melodic instrument dude playing
those same lines. Voice is different. It's about quality and expressiveness. I don't hear any of the former, and by design, the latter is one dimensional.

Checking out a Khemmis track, and it is pretty cool.

Just checked a track, and it's a no from me. Growly vox AND blast beats is my nightmare scenario for metal. I'm not so sure either one even fits this tune. They seem confused.

Just went thru the new Virgil Donati for the first time. It's the year of the vocals, and this is no exception.
Four vocal tunes. The guy is not to my liking. Technically sound, emotionally flat, melodically ordinary. 4 skips.
The instrumental stuff is good. In the style of, but not nearly as inspired as, the classic, In This Life.

I can't stand most of George X's list, sorry George. I like Yes, Tull, Gentle Giant, and the stuff on JaySee's list. For me, Deep Purple was as far as I got into "heavy metal." I still love King Crimson.
Some British stuff like Quiet Sun's "Mainstream," and 801, I consider "progressive rock." The best Pink Floyd for me was pop, the first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn."

Disclaimer: this is a rock album. He's done plenty of fusion, and his blues/rock based soloing never bores me, a self admitted fusion snob. If you can gat past the vocals, it's worth a listen if you're a fan.
